Joe Milligan finds watercolor to be the most rewarding yet challenging of the art forms.
“Managing the unpredictability of the water and pigment helps me form dramatic skies, seas, and the physical texture of real objects," he says. Joe pulls inspiration from back bays, salt marshes, and less traveled roads from Maine to North Carolina. Having spent summers at the Jersey Shore, his fondest memories are of exploring, fishing, surfing and sailing in Brigantine and Long Beach Island. His grandfather and uncles were lifelong carpenters and baymen so, the islands' unpaved gravel roads, old docks, wooden boats, empty beaches, and rock jetties have influenced his life and are reflected in his artwork.
Joe is a featured artist at galleries in southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. He has received awards at regional art shows and art societies. His paintings have appeared in books and magazines about the New Jersey coast and hang in private and corporate collections in the US, Europe and Bermuda. Joe and his wife Laurie, maintain studio homes in Wawa, Pennsylvania and Cape May, New Jersey.
